Music 156: Harmony & Form Lab IV

Play & Sing

Der Gasn Nigun

Look over the score and determine (wihtout singing or playing yet) where you will feel the tonic in each phrase or sub-phrase.

Write down your tonic choices and explain why they will sound/feel tonic.

Then learn to sing the piece flently using solfege. You may want to change your proposed tonic choices. If so, write down your new tonic(s) and what makes it/them sound tonic.

Finally, sing the melody with solfege while playing the bass on piano or guitar.

Old Joe Has Gone Fishing

Instructions are on the score.

Blues Play & Sing

Sing a simple blues melody of your devising while playing a standard pattern articulating the meter, bass, and harmony. Details here.

Standard Play & Sing

Sing an American Songbook standard chosen from this list while playing chords and bass line, reading from a lead sheet.

This may be done on guitar instead of piano, but only if you play a distinct bass line in addition to the chordal harmonies.
