Part I: listening and online resonse (due Tuesday April 26)

Listen to the complete “Songs of Love and Protest”. Read the program notes and lyrics first, and listen at least once with the score.
Post responses on Blackboard to the following:

1) Describe your overall impressions of the song cycle.
2) List the different styles or genres you hear referenced, and indicate where they occur (which song and measure numbers).
3) What is the effect of the combination of different syles within the same cycle, and (if you decide this is happening) within a single song? Be specific and cite examples.
4) Pick the song that most interests you for Parts II & III, and print out the score pages for that song.

 

Part II: questions (due Thursday, April 28)

Listen more to the song you chose and come to class with a list of five things that intrigue you and which you might want to explore through analysis. We will discuss and refine these in class in preparation for...

 

Part III: analysis (due Tuesday, May 3)

Follow through on the individual analysis project we decide on and turn in your results. Prose must be printed; musical examples may be either computer notated or neatly handwritten.
