Music 154: Harmony & Form Lab III
David Feurzeig

Dictation #8

All-in-one melody/harmony again this week.

This phrase features a modulation or tonicization of a closely related key.

Write the vocal melody (it begins with an upbeat sixteenth) and the piano bass line.
Write roman numeral functions in the blanks. For each progression, be sure to indicate the key of your analysis.
I will not grade based on whether you analyze non-diatonic chords as tonicizations vs. modulations, but your analysis should be correct in whatever key you choose.

For extra credit, complete the right-hand chords for the whole excerpt.

Hearing the bass: playback equipment matters!
Even high-quality headphones or micro speakers do not sound low frequencies, to say nothing of lower-fidelity mobile devices.
(You may perceive low tones, but this is a bizarre illusion caused by your brain processing the upper partials and positing the lower fundamental.)
Use the best equipment you can, ideally medium- to full-size speakers, to clarify the lower sounds.
