Music 154: Harmony & Form Lab III

Fall 2017
David Feurzeig

Dictation #1

Listen to the theme linked below.

Listen once with no other goal.

Listen a second time and conduct.

Listen 1-2 times more without yet writing anything down. Try to internalize the melody so you can sing it confidently from memory.

Determine the mode, Find and sing the tonic.

Listen to the final pitch. Is it the tonic? If not, what is it?

Listen to the opening pitch. Is it the tonic? If not, what is it?

Ideally, these last steps should be done as you sing the melody from memory, aloud or silently, not from the recording.

Only now, write the melody down with no further listenings. Do not worry if it is not as accurate as you could make it with further listenings.

Use a quarter-note beat. The theme is in D major.

Finally, check your notated melody on a keyboard or other instrument. Note any mistakes, but do not change them. Again, I will not penalize you for inaccuracy.

Write a few lines about any mistakes you made and what you think they tell you, or what you learned from them.
