Given the meter and an unbarred/unbeamed rhythm, re-notate with correct beaming and barlines
Given a notated rhythm, add takadimi syllables and “1-e-&-a…” syllables
Given takadimi syllables and a meter, rewrite as standard rhythmic notation with correct beaming
Dictation: notate a 2-measure rhythm by ear. With a quarter-note beat, rhythms may include values from half notes down to sixteenth notes. No triplets.
Pitch
Identify or write any note (correct letter name and accidental) in treble or bass clef, including notes with up to two ledger lines
Identify or write any note (letter name and accidental) on the keyboard
On the staff or keyboard, identify register of pitches with standard numbering (middle C = C4, etc.)
Write the enharmonic equivalent of a given note (e.g. Fb for E♮)
Scales
Be able to write a major scale in treble and bass clefs without a key signature, starting on any pitch, using individual accidentals as needed. Accidentals must be accurately placed, neatly written, and appropriately sized.
Write and recognize all major key signatures. Accidentals must be in proper order and in the conventional register (octave).
Identify each degree of the major scale by:
solfège syllable (do, re, mi, etc.)
name (tonic, supertonic, mediant, etc.)
numbers with carets (little hats)
Intervals
Be able to identify these intervals: half step, whole step, minor second, major second
Be able to construct any of those intervals above or below a given note
Distinguish between chromatic and diatonic half steps
Focus Melodies (memorized)
Be able to notate these in any key, given either the key (“do”) or the starting note (which is not necessarily “do”). I may ask you to notate with key signature, or without key signatures using individual accidentals as needed. In either case, you must notate neatly and correctly the pitches, accidentals as needed, rhythm, beaming, and barlines.
