Assignment 9
Read
Read this 5-page intro to triads.
(This is not the same as the DIY fill-in-the-blanks primer I distributed in class)
Major and minor triads on Teoría
Constructing and recognizing root-position M/m triads in notation
Skill 1a Build 10 root-position M/m triads from a lead-sheet symbol; 30 sec. each; treble clefSkill 1b Build 10 root-position M/m triads from a lead-sheet symbol; 30 sec. each; bass clef
Skill 2a Identify 10 root-position M/m triads; 25 sec. each; treble clef
Skill 2b Identify 10 root-position M/m triads; 25 sec. each; bass clef
Skill 3 Distinguish 10 root-position M and m triads by ear, no time limit. You can request that triads be arpeggiated by clicking the arpeggio sign (squiggly line) to the left of the speaker icon.
Scoring for each skill (10 pts possible): 100 = 10; 90-99 = 9; 80-89 = 7; 70-79 = 4; <70 = 0
Points awarded drop rapidly not to be harsh, but because a 50% correct result for skills 2 & 3 is no better than chance.
Recorder
Continue to practice the tunes below and bring your recorder to class Tuesday.
- “When The Saints Go Marching In” starting on G.
- “Twinkle Twinkle” starting on G. This tune uses high E.
- “Ode to Joy” starting on B. The complete tune is below. This tune uses low D. Note the syncopation at the return of the first phrase in m. 12-13!
- “Jingle Bells” (chorus)—see how well you can work this out by ear.
