Music 1310: Theory Fundamentals

Assignment 5

There are multiple components to this assignment. While the written and online drill work is not due until Tuesday, you should practice good time management by beginning early and working on this over several days. Musical skills and understanding are not acquired in occasional cram sessions but by regular, steady, incremental work.

Read

Read this further chapter on the major scale.
Read in full before Thursday’s class and come with any questions.
Here is a recording of the “Alleluia” round.

Write

Complete all the exercises on the handout before Tuesday’s class.

Scavenger hunt!

Find my office and describe one distinctive item on my door. Email me your description by Tuesday. (Directions to my office.)

Teoría

Complete and submit scores to all the following Tuesday’s class. Feel free to adjust the settings for practice, but be sure to return to the settings as fixed in the links below when you are ready to record and submit your scores.

Skill 4: ID, bass clef, 7 sec. each, stop after 10, at least 9 correct for full credit

You can adjust the settings however you like for practice, but you need to go back to the settings above and save successful results at those settings before class.

As with all teoria assignments, send your PDF score report as an attachment to UVM.teoria@gmail.com. Complete instructions are on the Teoría page.

Note: please do not save your practice results, only your successful (or most successful) completion of each skill.

Recorder

Play at least 5 minutes a day, becoming familiar and fluent with the notes G, A, and B. Here is a fingering chart:

Rock out like it’s 2011 to this 3-note power pop chorus, transposed to G for your recorder-playing pleasure by your loving instructor. (Chorus begins at 0:30).
