This introduction to meter.
Listen
Listen to music both familiar and unfamiliar and practice clapping on the beat.
Determine the meter (duple, triple, or quadruple) and:(If you like music with mixed or changing meters, that’s another story, we’ll get to that later.)
- clap along Indian style, using the palms and fingers as we did in class, and
- conduct using the appropriate pattern.
Write
Complete the written exercises on the class handout except for the rows marked “standard notation”. (This is explained in the reading, so you can give it a try, but I do not expect you to complete this component.) If you did not get a copy of the written exercises, here is a PDF.
