Music 009: Music Theory Fundamentals

Assignment 9

Write (due Wednesday)

Complete all exercises on pp. 138-146

Some of these exercises were part of Asst. 8. Check your prior work carefully, making sure all notation is neat with correct accidentals, accurate accidental placement, proper stem direction, and correct beaming.

Note these errors on p. 143:
“Rocky Mountain” line 1, third measure should be | d d m s |
“Rocky Mountain” line 3, second measure should be | s  l  |

For ex. 4.15 (Rocky Mountain) use at least three different duple meters, for example #1-2 in 2/4, #3 in 2/8, and #4 in 2/2.

A note on rote learning

Rote learning is often cast as a thoughtless and uncreative technique, especially in the West and in the last 100 years.

But not all rote learning is bad or mere busywork.

How did you learn to walk and talk? Not by thinking about the main “ideas” and trying out just a couple of examples. How do you get faster in a racing sport? Not by “understanding” an exercise and then reviewing it briefly before your event.

Learning music is much the same. There is value in writing out the same scale type in many different keys, always taking the time to write neatly and correctly. Your work should be repetitive but mindful, just as when you are learning to play an instrument.

As you write, think about half steps and whole steps, or scale-degree syllables, or note names. Sing these out loud as you write. Play each exercise on the keyboard. Any or all of these will make the exercises meaningful and rapidly improve your musicianship.

Rhythmic dictation on teoría (complete before class on Friday)

This is to allow you to plan ahead. There will be written work also scheduled for Friday as part of Assignment 10.

Practice rhythmic dictation at these settings unti you can get at least 4/5 correct, then save your results: Rhythmic dictation in simple meters, fastest value = eighth note, no rests or triplets, Adagio (or faster), stop after 5, at least 4 correct

Of course, you can adjust the settings however you like for practice, but you need to go back to the settings above and save successful results at those settings before class.

Note: please do not save your practice results, only your successful (or most successful) completion of each skill.
